A New Day

“Write it on your heart
that every day is the best day in the year.
He is rich who owns the day, and no one owns the day
who allows it to be invaded with fret and anxiety.

Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day;
begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit
to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

This new day is too dear,
with its hopes and invitations,
to waste a moment on the yesterdays.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson, Collected Poems and Translations

Yesterday was just another one of "those days".
From the very start of the day to after the sun went down, it was one of them for sure.
Starting when someone decided to pee on my yoga mat and splash in it with the tv remote in hand. That's what I get for trying to exercise right?
After sharing this photo on my instagram, I was grateful for the understanding and delightful responses from fellow mamas. I was cracking up at the comments and feeling much better.

"That's what you get for working out, go get a donut now"
"lol, I can totally relate"
"Woo hoo- I'm not the only mama who's child dumps/pees on things"
"Go get a diet coke and call it a day"

Ha! I was rolling at some of these. More than anything I was just lifted knowing other mamas have these days too. Sometimes it's just enough to know you are not alone.

As the day went on, and boy did it just keep going on and on and on..... I thought to myself
"Ok, I should have thrown in the towel this morning and gone straight to the store
for a donut or chocolate cake, or anything sweet for that matter.
I should have called it a day with a giant diet coke in hand."
Ok, back onto the point.
We had a play date at the park (Rosie and I walked there) just as we were ready to head home it started to pour. The southern storm type of pour. Full on drenching and coming from all directions.
I grumbled and thought " Yep, one of those days" when sweet Rosie started to giggle and giggle.
She smiled back at me as she started running into the rain. Looking up to the sky, she smiled and held her hands out to feel the drops. She couldn't stop smiling and I couldn't keep her out of the rain.
It hit me. The smile on her face as those giant drops splashed her little head, it just got me.
I was totally overcome with such a sweet lesson of happiness and perspective.
As the day went on, I somehow forgot about that sweet moment. Because we all do right?
The house got messy, I tried to finish a painting and my little helper spilled paint/water..
I was focusing on the hard things. Later on I was talking with a friend who said "Somedays as a mom I just want to hide under a pillow for a while. I feel like I fail at being a mother, too often."

As we kept discussing, I was reminded again of the sweet moment in the rain with Rosie.
The conversation was quickly redirected and we came to the reoccurring conclusion that each day has challenges, but we always always have the chance to be better the next.
Not only the next day, but the next moment for that matter.
Each day is a new day, and lucky for us we can choose to be better than the day before.
I hope I can always remember these common but valuable lessons:
We are never alone, we always have our Savior by our side & most often he answers our prayers through others. Each day is a new day and we must make it the best.
Dance in the rain.

 Gosh I love her!
